摘要
Background: As a result of demographic change, the number of cancer diagnoses in older people is increasing. This poses a challenge for practitioners due to the need to take geriatric care into account. In addition to physical symptoms, there are often various psychological stresses that can lead to mental disorders if left untreated. For this reason, psycho-oncological interventions adapted to the needs of geriatric patients are essential. Objectives: The aim of this article is to identify possible psychological stress that can arise in older patients in the context of cancer and to provide adequate psycho-oncological intervention options depending on the underlying disorder. Materials and methods: Specific diagnostic tools such as the Depression in Old Age Scale and fatigue screening are suitable for diagnosing vulnerable geriatric tumor patients in the sense of a geriatric assessment. In the presence of a mental disorder requiring treatment, various psycho-oncological approaches can lead to an improvement in wellbeing. Conclusion: Geriatric tumor patients require treatment that is adjusted to the needs and limitations that occur with age. This applies to both oncological and psychological treatment of the respective diseases. Psycho-oncological intervention approaches for the treatment of depression or fatigue can include, e.g., resilience-oriented, group-therapeutic, mindfulness-based, and resource-oriented content.
