Construction Method for a Vernacular Architecture in La Yerbabuena, Jalisco, Mexico

In La Yerbabuena, Jalisco, Mexico, a building typology based on vernacular materials stands out. The people of this community have abandoned the habit of using these materials because they think they are low quality and detrimental to social and economic status. Therefore, the research purpose was to investigate existing construction methods in this community, in order to propose a vernacular construction method that provides information to the inhabitants and encourages them to appreciate and build homes with this architectural method. An analytical and propositional research was conducted, within the historical context of homes built in La Yerbabuena, in the region of Sierra de Amula, Jalisco. In conclusion, it is noted that the vernacular houses prevailing in La Yerbabuena are between 100 to 120 years old. Their users mention that these houses provide thermal, acoustic, and lighting comfort, and natural ventilation, which leads them to strongly recommend this construction system based on their living experience.
