Surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) are the category of ionic liquids specifically with long hydrophobic alkyl chains. Besides as an eco-friendly alternative to organic solvent, a multitude of reports have focused on the performance of SAILs that target at the drug-delivery application. This review introduces the typical structures, theoretical and experimental characterization techniques, aspects of safety, and self-assembly behaviors and interactions of SAILs for drug-delivery application. In particular, a total of 38 drugs reported with a SAIL research were summarized and discussed according to their hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and amphipathic natures.
