摘要
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have emerged as highly adaptable materials with a wide range of applications. Biological metal-organic frameworks (Bio-MOFs) enhance the compatibility with living organisms and the effectiveness of medications, nutraceuticals, and enzymes by increasing their stability, ability to be absorbed by the body, and solubility by utilizing naturally existing biomolecules as organic ligands. This review presents the latest developments in the encapsulation of bioactive compounds using Bio-MOFs. The review discusses the cytotoxicity of Bio-MOFs, their synthesis techniques, and activation processes. It also covers various applications such as drug delivery, food technology, molecular separation, biological sensing, cellular preservation, uremic toxin removal, gas separation, and the encapsulation of antioxidants and fragrances using cyclodextrin Bio-MOFs. The utilization of nucleobase adenine Bio-MOFs for the administration of anti-cancer drugs was thoroughly examined. Future perspectives include altering the release kinetics, elucidating the loading processes, and improving scalability.
