摘要
ObjectiveAlthough research has identified adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as detrimental to individuals' physical and psychological health, research examining mechanisms of action has been lacking. As a result, the current study examined the role that psychological symptoms serve in the relationship between ACEs and substance use. MethodsA sample of 82 men and 101 women completed relevant measures. Correlational analyses indicated significant associations, especially for men. ACEs were a significant predictor of substance use behaviors in both men and women. ResultsSymptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD partially mediated the relationship between ACEs and substance use behaviors in men only. ConclusionResults demonstrated the importance of promoting psychological symptoms screening and care, particularly in those with ACEs and substance use.
