The use of psychotropic drugs by women based on the experiences of doctors. A qualitative study in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina (2021-2022)

The article presents results of an ongoing qualitative research that aims to make a contribution to mental health and gender studies in Argentina. The objective of the research is to problematize the use of psychotropic drugs by women through an interpretive analysis of meanings and experiences from primary sources. For this, a qualitative methodology was adopted that included conducting semi-structured interviews with general and family doctors and/or psychiatrists who prescribe psychotropic drugs and work in the health field of the city of Mar del Plata. Regarding the development of the article, after explaining the theoretical framework and methodology, the analysis of the interviews is presented. It attempts to highlight the assessments from the point of view of doctors regarding the use of psychotropic drugs by women. Based on the analysis of the interviews, the meanings of the participants are described, taking into account the aspects considered in the selection and administration of prescribed medication, the main demands of their patients, and, how, in a transversal manner, prevailing models of masculinity and femininity in the use of psychotropic drugs.
