Rising cases of invasive meningococcal disease, towards mandatory vaccination

Invasive meningococcal infection is fatal in 10% of cases, despite the initiation of antibiotic therapy. Antibiotic therapy should be initiated as soon as possible, and combined with dexamethasone corticosteroid therapy. Contact cases should also be treated prophylactically. In France, only vaccination against meningococcal C is compulsory for infants. In view of the increase in infections caused by other serogroups, the French National Authority for Health has proposed mandatory vaccination against all serogroups by 2025.
