In summary, the New York State mandated G6PD screening is flawed and fails to achieve its goal of preventing kernicterus. Clinical education and adherence to bilirubin screening guidelines is the key to appropriate management of hyperbilirubinemia. Public health laws should include a team of key stakeholders and experts in the specific field—in this case, the AAP, the Section of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine, and the American Society of Hematology and bioethicists. Screening for G6PD should be universal and race/culture-based medicine is an outdated practice. © 2024 American Academy of Pediatrics. All rights reserved.
