This article is about the representation of world ('Welthaltigkeit') in Goethe's novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers. Based on from the 'classics' of research on realism (G. Lukacs, E. Auerbach, R. Barthes, etc.), the article differentiates varieties of realist narrative (documentary realism, psychological realism, reality effects, and 'vividness'). In this way, the article also explores the potential of 18th century literature that points to a different genealogy of realism.
