摘要
This paper, with the aim of broadening the panorama on the use of literary sources (classical and contemporary, prose and verse) and non-literary sources (periodical press, letters) in linguistic historiography, approaches the explicit canon present in a textual corpus from the United States composed during the 19th century (Manuel de Torres, Louis Hargous, Frances Sales, Mariano Cub & iacute; y Soler, Joseph Salkeld, Mariano Vel & aacute;zquez de la Cadena, Th & eacute;odore Simonn & eacute;, William Ireland Knapp, Alejandro Ybarra). The qualitative analysis of the canon shows how the works of Sol & iacute;s, Feij & oacute;o, Cadalso, Graci & aacute;n, Fray Luis de Le & oacute;n, Fray Luis de Granada, Almeida, Saavedra Fajardo, Aesop, Bret & oacute;n de los Herreros or P & eacute;rez Gald & oacute;s were used to practise reading and translation and to learn about the quality of Spanish textual production, but also how Spanish teachers used them for the moral and religious education of their students.
