IBD may present acutely in a number of ways, including severe acute colitis, TM, free perforation, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intraperitoneal/retroperitoneal abscess, or bowel obstruction. Regardless of whether the presentation is de novo or in the setting of long-standing IBD, it is important for all general and colorectal surgeons to understand the nuances of the management of these patients in the emergency setting.
