Case Management with Older Opioid Dependents: Results of a Mixed-Method Study

Aims: From 2014 to 2017, a manualized case management program adapted to the target group of aging opioid users was tested in Germany in a multicenter study. The aim was to analyze the feasibility of the procedure in the structures of the German addiction and drug treatment system and in different settings (low -threshold facilities, psychosocial counseling centers, assisted living homes). Methods: Quantitative data on 62 clients were collected in a pre -post design before the start of treatment and after completion of the six-month intervention. Quantitative data were also collected from 21 professionals in addition to qualitative interviews. Results: The results show that case management with older opioid users can be implemented, that changes are possible, and that both professionals and clients cope well with the process. The implementation differs depending on the setting. Case manager role diversity and duplicative treatment planning procedures complicate the implementation. Conclusions: Case management adapted to the target group and coordinated with other planning procedures could contribute to improving the living situation of older opioid users.
