摘要
The need for research in the area of renewable energy which is cost-competitive with fossil fuels continues as the world population grows. This chapter reviews the use of non-land based renewable feedstocks for the production of biofuels in the context of engaging undergraduate students in environmental chemistry research. Algae, oleaginous yeast and aquatic plants are described as potential sources of carbohydrate and lipid-based biofuels. An example of an undergraduate research project through the study of hydrothermal liquefaction of Azolla caroliniana, a species of aquatic fern, is described. Implementation of environmental chemistry research activities in undergraduate science programs is discussed as a method to improve student success and retention. © 2020 American Chemical Society.
