Current comparison experiment for portable short-range high-frequency ground-wave radar

To validate the current measurement performance of portable short-range high-frequency ground-wave radar, vector current synthesized from two radar stations and radial current independently obtained from two radar stations were evaluated by comparison with current observations recorded by current meter. The vector currents assessment results indicate that the root-mean-square error value for current velocity is 10.37 cm/s and that for current direction is 15.12°. The radial currents evaluation results show that the root-mean-square error value for one radar station is 10.83 cm/s and 13.50 cm/s for the other radar station. By analyzing the signal to noise ratio of the radar received sea echoes, it is shown that the difference in radial current measurement accuracy exactly results from the difference of the signal to noise ratio of the sea echoes received by the two radars. © 2020, Editorial Board of Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
