Preparation of Sulfonated Polyarylethersulfone/Sulfonated Polyvinyl Alcohol Crosslinked Film and Its Application in Methanol Fuel Cell

In methanol fuel cell applications, the commercial Nafion membrane has not only high cost but also poor proton selectivity. In order to overcome this contradiction, a low-cost sulfonated polyarylethersulfone (SPAES) was used as matrix to prepare a SPAES crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film (SPAES-C-PVA) and SPAES crosslinked sulfonated polyvinyl alcohol (SPVA) film (SPAES-C-SPVA) by heat treatment. The SPAES-C-SPVA film exhibits good mechanical properties, dimensional stability and methanol barrier properties. The proton selectivity of SPAES-C-SPVA is as high as 13.6×104 S•s•cm-3, which is about 3 times and 4.3 times than that of the SPAES and Nafion 117 membrane, respectively. © 2020, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering.
