摘要
The major challenge to researchers in the field of energy production is to mitigate the effects of global warming by controlling the greenhouse gases that are emitted during incomplete combustion. The most viable approach is the use of renewable fuels to produce green energy. Therefore, the purpose of the present experimental study is to use ethanol as the renewable fuel blended with gasoline to investigate the performance and emission characteristics of a four-stroke, variable compression ratio (VCR) spark-ignition engine. The experiments carried out with pure gasoline (G100) is considered as the base study, while 10, 15, and 20% ethanol by volume is used to prepare the blends with gasoline. Corresponding to the proportion of ethanol and gasoline, the blends are designated as G90E10, G85E15, and G80E20, respectively. In the investigation, G80E20 is noted to be best blend at all loads and compression ratios (CRs). There is a considerable increment of brake thermal efficiency of 30.12% with G80E20 as compared to G100 at the break power of 1.91 kW and CR of 10:1. Moreover, 40.02 and 28.75% reductions in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions with the G80E20 blend in comparison to G100, are estimated, respectively. Nevertheless, at all loads and CRs, there is also the minor reduction in oxides of nitrogen with all the blended fuels. © 2022 by Begell House, Inc.
