This study aims to investigate the transformative potential of Carnival and Cumbia dance in terms of gender equality. To this end, a bibliographic and jurisprudential review is carried out regarding the Barranquilla Carnival, the symbology and meanings of Cumbia, as well as gender equality, resorting mainly to the analysis of documentary sources. From this review it is possible to conclude that, through the Carnival tradition, postulates alluding to the social metamorphosis necessary to advance gender equality can be imprinted on the education of makers and participants of the carnivals. Empowering and vindicating the role of women in Carnival, breaking down gender roles and rooting the idea of equality in society through tradition, are some of the transformations possible from the folklore and the Barranquilla Carnival festival. Its meaning, significance and social and cultural impact can become a vehicle towards respect for differences and gender equality in the city and contribute to overcoming stereotypes typical of patriarchal culture. The inclusion of these contents as a curriculum or guidelines in the materialization of the traditional Barranquilla festival must be essential to generate the desired social and cultural changes.
