Enhancement of compressive stresses by application of shaped temporal pulses in confinement layer free nanosecond laser shock peening

摘要
We report on enhancement of compressive stress observed both in tungsten as well as tungsten alloy when a shaped double pulse was utilized for confinement layer free nanosecond laser shock peening (CLF-ns-LSP) compared to a single pulse. A threefold enhancement of peak compressive stresses was observed in TAM7525 (tungsten-copper alloy) for shaped double pulses. Further, we investigate the effect of changes to the parameters of the double pulse to the induced compressive stresses. These experiments and observations show superior laser shock peening (LSP) performance for application of shaped double pulse compared to traditionally used single pulse.
