Power generation and hydrogen production from renewable energy is considered as an effective way to solve the waste of surplus renewable energy. At present, the best way to realize large-scale hydrogen transportation may be to blend hydrogen into natural gas at a certain proportion and transport the mixture through the existing natural gas pipelines or pipeline networks. The upper limit of allowable hydrogen blending ratio for natural gas pipelines has not been determined clearly. Much attention shall be paid to reveal the influence of hydrogen-blended natural gas on hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion of typical pipes, and it is necessary to establish a key mechanical property database and compatibility evaluation system of typical pipes. To explore the characteristics and evolution laws of hydrogen safety accidents, e.g., leakage, accumulation, combustion and explosion, it is necessary to clarify the newly-introduced impact of hydrogen blending on safety accidents and develop the online intelligent defect monitoring and emergency repair techniques. The research on the risk assessment and reliability evaluation methods of hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline transportation is still insufficient, thus it is necessary to carry out integrity evaluation and intelligent management of natural gas pipeline transportation considering the influence of hydrogen blending. Also, it is necessary to further improve the supporting equipment, transportation process, hydrogen blending technique and hydrogen separation technique of hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline transportation and formulate the technical standards and safe operation technical system of hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline transportation.
