Motivation of male students to follow the nursing career in public and private universities

摘要
The motivation, expectations, interest, and satisfaction of the students who study the Nursing Degree are linked to factors that can interrelate and influence each other. The decisions that cause people to become nurses have been explored in several studies in recent years, and these influence the academic performance they obtain in different subjects. Objective: To identify the motivation of male students to follow the Nursing Degree in public and private universities in Cuenca - 2020. Materials and methods: Quantitative, descriptive study of cross-section, the universe was constituted by all the male students enrolled in the Nursing Degree of the Catholic University of Cuenca as well as the State University of Cuenca; the technique utilized was the survey; the instrument a previously validated questionnaire; the cost is 2,250 dollars, the duration of the degree work is 11 months, in the course of the investigation the bioethical processes were guaranteed, the data were processed in the program SPSS 15.00. Results: 93.3% of a high consideration of reason for admission in altruism and knowledge was obtained, it is perceived as an important part of admission to the nursing career. Family members, friends, or acquaintances were not identified as influential factors in the selection of the profession to be followed, but rather their motives were to help others. Conclusions: The future professionals have a high degree of consideration as a reason for entering the profession, the desire to help and be in solidarity with others.
