Yttrium aluminum garnet(Y3Al5O12)transparent ceramics with high mechanical strength, stable physical and chemical properties, especially covering ultraviolet, visible and infrared light transmission and other excellent properties, have been widely applied in solid-state lasers, missile domes, infrared windows and transparent armors. This review aims to summarize the preparation process of YAG transparent ceramics, including powder synthesis, green body forming, ceramic sintering and sintering additive selection, followed by a contrast on performance, specifications and costs of YAG transparent ceramics prepared by different process routes in detail. After that, the influence of different rare earth ions doping on the properties of YAG-based transparent ceramics is comprehensively explained. Finally, the future trends and developments of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG)transparent ceramics are prospected based on a summary of existing problems. © 2023 Chinese Society of Rare Earths.
