ratives, Allegories and Arguments' is a colby Francesca Alesse and is divided into two parts: the first, 'Philo of Alexandria and Myth telling', includes the essays by E. Gasparro and R. Bloch; the second, 'Gods, Heroes, and some monsters', comprises the Alesso and L. Saudelli. Complementing the volume are indexes 'of Philonic Passages', 'of Scripture, of Other Jewish and Christian Mythological Characters and Places'. The first essay, 'Philo's Refashioning of Greek Myth' by Erich Gruen, starts with an observation: the ways in which the author approaches mythology and employs it in his writings are numerous and not always consistent with each other. There are, in fact, references to myth in a negative way as fable narrative, in contrast with the divine word and the values of Judaism; on the other hand, in some cases Philo defends myths and allegories found in the Holy Scriptures, myth, as analytical and exegetical tools in order to justify the use of the allegorical method. The author also employs Greek myth in philosophical, ethicalmoral terms or to offer exempla of good governance for politicians.
