Fractal Dimension and Multifractal Spectrum of Surface Morphology of Corroded Steel

To investigate the surface topography of steel plate with different corrosion levels, specimens were obtained by the accelerated corrosion tests in a salt spray test chamber and divided into 10 groups according to corrosion ages. The three-dimensional data of the surface topography of the corroded steel specimens are collected by the 3D non-contact profilometers. The fractal and multifractal characteristics of the surface topography of corroded steel specimens were calculated by differential box-counting method, and the variation of fractal characteristics with corrosion age were analyzed. The results show the fractal dimension D gradually increases and then exhibits an undulating change with the increase of corrosion time; the multifractal spectral width Δα fluctuates and Δf rises in the law of "continuous increase-decrease". © 2020, Materials Review Magazine.
