Design and simulation study of novel reaction wheels with adjustable inertia for enhanced attitude control

摘要
This study introduces a novel approach for improving the performance of reaction wheels by dynamically altering their moment of inertia. To achieve this, several innovative mechanisms based on adjustable mass distribution, wheels with variable geometry, and systems with multiple wheels are proposed. A generalized mathematical model is developed, which employs the radius of gyration as the variable. Detailed 3D designs of these concepts are introduced, and their characteristics, theoretical behavior, and potential performance are explored through mathematical modeling and simulations. The study also emphasizes the efficiency of these systems in attitude control, by analyzing their dynamic behavior under various control strategies.
