摘要
Metanil yellow (MY) is a widely used colour additive to impart yellow or orange hues in food items to make it more attractive to consumers. Previous studies have shown that MY can put a negative impact to our health and various physiologic parameters. In this study we have tried to demonstrate a detailed effect of MY consumption during gestation period as well as lactation period within rats by using Wister albino rat as an experimental model. We have found that increased consumption of MY through various food sources can interfere with oxygen carrying capacity of blood to various tissues. Liver and kidneys are largely affected among the vital organs due to increased catalase activity (which can generate ROS) within those tissues. We observed shortened estrous cycles within MY treated groups. The pups of MY treated rats have shown stunted growth when compared to control group. © Zoological Society, Kolkata, India 2024.
