Trends of Research on Mindfulness: a Bibliometric Study of an Emerging Field

Interest in mindfulness research has increased exponentially in the last two decades, with one of the factors being the search for scientific evidence and answers in clinical interventions. Thus, we investigated the publication trends for mindfulness in the literature in the last 21 years to deeper explore this emerging research field. An electronic search was conducted in the Web of Science database. The selected articles were published between 1999 and 2019. The Bibliometrix package of R software was used for the bibliometric study. A total of 10,430 articles were selected. The USA led in the number of articles published, with 43%, followed by the UK, Australia and Canada. There was an increase in the number of publications, with an annual growth rate of 11.8%, where 2019 was the year with the highest number of articles (2017). The journal with the most articles published on the subject was Mindfulness, representing 8.2% of the total, and the author E. Garland had the highest number of publications (75). The number of published studies on mindfulness has grown rapidly, with a publication peak in 2019 and indicates a growing trend in the coming years in the number of publications and methodological quality. The USA still has a leading position in global research. The journal with the most articles was Mindfulness, a unique journal dedicated to the theme. Moreover, the author with the highest number of published articles is also an American psychologist (E. Garland). © Associação Brasileira de Psicologia 2023.
