The new millennium is a time of significant environmental and societal changes; which include a rapidly changing climate; a continuous increase in atmosphere pollutants; shifts in demographic trends; and land use. The need to better understand and monitor these environmental changes has never been greater. Several studies analyzed the climate change effect on mountain regions and forest ecosystems at different scales resulting in documents that raised awareness of the importance of sustainable management of these distinctive ecosystems (EEA; 2012). One of the most recent is the project Climate-Smart Forestry in Mountain Regions (CLIMO). The CLIMO deals with the effects of climate changes on the growth dynamics of mountain forest ecosystems that are so far much less understood than the ones in northern latitudes (Tognetti et al; 2022). It was encouraged by the European Union funding programme European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST Action). The authors would like to thank the Ministry of Education; Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia for financial support (Grant No: 451-03-68/2022-14/200026 and 451-03-68/2022-14/200023). Sample collection and Laboratory analyses were done as part of the COST action Climate-smart Forestry in Mountain Region CA15226 CLIMO.The authors would like to thank the Ministry of Education; Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia for financial support (Grant No: 451-03-68/2022-14/200026 and 451-03-68/2022-14/200023 ).
