Synthesis of ethyl tert-butyl ether in a NaA membrane reactor

In order to solve the problem of low ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) yield caused by water produced during the reaction of ethanol and tert-butanol, a hollow fiber NaA zeolite membrane was apply as a core component for preparing a pervaporation membrane reactor (PVMR), where water could be efficiently removed by pervaporation. Comparing with none-membrane reactors, the results show that increasing of ethanol in initial feed solution could suppress side reaction and improve ETBE yield, but the dilution effect also results in a decrease of PVMR dehydration efficiency. In addition, both increasing ethanol amount and applying PVMR can strengthen the process, and the promotion was mainly reflected in the improvement of main reaction selectivity, while the change in conversion was limited. The results show that the yield of ETBE can be increased from 9% to 25% by optimizing the reaction conditions. © 2021, Editorial Board of Journal of Chemical Engineering of Chinese Universities".
