Employment outcomes for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in Spain are alarming. Despite the many advantages of hiring people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, only a small number are employed. New approaches to supporting employment are needed. A critical factor in acquiring and maintaining employment is self-determination, which must be promoted over the life course. The Self-determined career design model offers an instructional model for the development of self-determination-related skills needed for the workplace, providing continuity to the Self-determination learning model of instruction, on which it is based. The present study aims to present the Spanish version of the afore-mentioned program, to explain its characteristics, to offer an example of how it can be implemented and to show the scientific evidence available to date that supports its effectiveness.
