AN ANALYSIS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL-IMPACT ON PULPING AND BLEACHING TECHNOLOGIES

New technology and environmental concerns are changing pulping and bleaching processes as well as mill recovery and utility areas. The paper evaluates costs in seven cases for progressively removing chlorine compounds and color from bleach plant effluent. Total cost to build and operate a new bleached kraft pulp mill would increase by ten percent with total chlorine compound elimination. Costs would be higher for similar modification of existing mills.
