The Geiger thick plate test and the vibrating composite beam test for the evaluation of vibration damping materials are briefly reviewed, and the advantages and disadvantages of both methods are analyzed. The results of damping tests conducted on composite (two layered) plate and beam test samples coated with the same damping material LD501 are compared and shown to agree within about 20%. The composite beam test method is shown to offer more advantages than the plate test method as it is now run, primarily because material parameters are obtained in the beam test that can be used to estimate the vibration properties of damping material coated plates of arbitrary geometry. © 1969, Acoustical Society of America.
