NEW MEASUREMENT OF THE PROTON GYROMAGNETIC RATIO AND A DERIVED VALUE OF THE FINE-STRUCTURE CONSTANT ACCURATE TO A PART IN 10

A new value for the fine-structure constant has been obtained from a new measurement of the gyromagnetic ratio of the proton. The result, γp′(low)NBS=2.675 132 29(57)×108 s-1 TNBS-1 (0.21 ppm), is used to derive α-1=137.035 963(15) (0.11 ppm). This value of α-1 is (0.33±0.14) ppm less than the value of α-1 derived from measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, ae, and its current best quantum electrodynamics theoretical estimate. © 1979 The American Physical Society.
