POSTTRAUMATIC-STRESS-DISORDER FOLLOWING A SUICIDE ATTEMPT

How commonly does a suicide attempt lead to post-traumatic stress disorder? The terrifying nature of events before and after many suicide attempts and the increasing rates of suicide attempts in the general population suggest that PTSD as a result of a suicide attempt should not be a rare occurrence. However, a thorough review of the literature revealed no reports. We provide one case report and discuss the theoretical, clinical, and research questions linking traumatic suicide attempts to subsequent PTSD.
