The Secretary of the Spanish Society of Thoracic-Cardiovascular Surgery presents the annual report of the national registry of activity during the year 2012. In this report we collect interventions carried out during 2012 and sent by 56 national centres. Information was introduced in a questionnaire that was voluntarily sent and analysed by this Secretary ensuring the confidentiality of the data of each centre. Fifty six services (49 public and 7 private) have sent their data. In 2012 a total of 32,488 cardiovascular surgical procedures have been collected in this registry, with a median of 503 surgeries by centre (range, 50-1933). 17,287 interventions were performed under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and 19,549 cardiac interventions more, including coronary artery bypass off-pump, congenital surgery without CPB, transcatheter aortic prosthesis and pericardiectomies with an average of 349 hospital surgeries were performed. Divided by type of operation: valvular surgery was 40.3%, isolated coronary surgery 25.3%, combined 10.2%, surgery of the aorta 6.8%, and miscellaneous in 18.2%. The questionnaire for the collection of data, has changed this year remains as a record of interventions that can be basically compared with the data of previous years. However, this time it has been requested the data of mortality expected for each type of procedures through the logistic EuroSCORE scales for acquired heart disease and Aristotle for congenital heart disease. Rates of interventions per million inhabitants referred to our country population data published by the National Institute of Statistics on January 1, 2012 were also analysed with a total of 387.61 surgeries with extracorporeal and 425.14 major cardiac procedures.
