SOME INERTIAL RANGE CORRELATORS IN FULLY-DEVELOPED TURBULENCE

Measurements of the correlators K1(r)=Δur(Δr)2 and K2(r)=Δur(Δqr)2 for separations r within the inertial range are executed in a large wind tunnel and in the atmospheric surface layer at Rλ(2.0-12.7)×103. Here u, q, and denote longitudinal velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and dissipation rate, respectively, and Δφr=φ(x)-φ(x+r), φ=u,q,. It is found that the correlators behave as K1(r)=-c1σu2 and K2(r)=-c2σur5/Λ where σu is the rms value of the longitudinal velocity, and Λ is the external turbulence scale. The constants c1 and c2 are found to be independent of both Rλ and the flow geometry which agrees with the Yakhot theoretical prediction [Phys. Rev.
