Institutionalized geriatric patients are frequently referred to as 'deprived' by authors in the scientific literature and by people who observe and treat them. This paper presents an overview of several areas of deprivation research (animal, child, young adult), and applies their methods of conceptualizing and measuring deprivation to institutionalized geriatric patients. Suggestions are made for more precise approaches to studying and treating deprivation in this population. © 1979 S. Karger AG, Basel.
