Demand-side management has been practised for many years by North American utilities, encouraged by consumer pressure groups and regulators. With increasing demands to optimise the return on generation and network assets in the UK electricity industry and pressures to reduce environmental pollution, the potential of DSM to deliver such benefits while retaining the profitability of electricity companies is now under consideration.
