HIGH-PRESSURE RAMAN-STUDY OF LIQUID AND CRYSTALLINE CARBONYL SULFIDE

High-pressure Raman spectra of liquid and crystalline carbonyl sulfide (COS) have been measured up to 15 GP a at 300 K in a gasketed diamond anvil cell. The liquid-solid transition pressure is determined to be 2.70 GPa at 300 K. An intermolecular Raman mode is found in the solid phase, and its frequency shows the pressure-sensitive increase with a slope (d-nu/dp) of 10.6 cm-1/GPa. The pressure dependence of intramolecular Raman frequencies is investigated, and their characteristics are discussed and compared with the previous results in CO2 and CS2, including the effect of Fermi resonance. A dark modification of COS appears irreversibly at pressures above 17 GPa.
