ON THE ADSORPTION OF SULFATE SPECIES ON POLYCRYSTALLINE PLATINUM - AN FTIR STUDY IN FLUORIDE BASE ELECTROLYTE

Spectra of adsorbed sulfate species on polycrystalline platinum in mildly acid solution have been analyzed as a function of the electrode potential. Maximum adsorption is observed at ca. 650 mV. Most of the adsorbed ions are in the form of sulfate, which present a split of the nu-3 band, leading to a C2-nu-symmetry. The ion is oriented with the two oxygen atoms directed towards the surface. In the platinum oxide region, the sulfate ions are included in the oxide layer and show a strong interaction with the platinum oxide. The band shift for the adsorbed species with potential is due to a complex effect of electric field and lateral interactions.
