Excess molar volumes VEm at T = 298.15 K of (1-chloropentane + heptane + decane) and (1-chlorohexane + heptane + decane) were determined using a DMA 60/602 Anton-Paar densimeter. The sign of VEm varied with the composition for both mixtures. The experimental values were compared with the results obtained with some empirical methods for the estimation of ternary properties from binary results and with the Nitta et al. group-contribution model. For these ternary mixtures the same behaviour that had been observed in (1-chloroalkane + an n -alkane) was found: excess volumes decrease with the 1-chloroalkane length. © 1993 Academic Press Ltd.
