The egg case, larva and pupa of Phaenonotum exstriatum (Say 1835) are described, based on material reared in laboratory. The biology of this species is also described, and the placement of Phaenonotum Sharp 1882 among the aquatic or semiaquatic genera of Hydrophilidae is discussed.
