The Mossbauer data for both Sn-119 and I-129 have been analyzed to yield a consistent interpretation of the chemical bonding in SnI4. The Sn-I bond contains about 23% pi-character. and 5-6% s-hybridization is involved in the iodine sigma-bonding orbital. The atoms in SnI4 are essential y neutral, the net charges being - 0.015 on iodine and +0.060 on tin. These results resolve the apparent discrepancy between tin and iodine Mossbauer experiments.
