Initial Stage Sintering Kinetics of Cubic Zirconia Containing 0.3 mol % Copper Oxide Addition

摘要
The sintering behavior of 8YSZ containing 0.3 mol% CuO was investigated to clarify the effect of CuO addition on the initial sintering stage. The sintering kinetic at the initial sintering stage was studied using both isothermal and constant heating rate techniques. The results showed that the CuO addition enhances sintering of 8YSZ to take place at lower temperature. The kinetic study revealed that the diffusion mechanism of 8YSZ is still grain boundary diffusion after adding CuO. The CuO addition to 8YSZ slightly decreases the activation energy of sintering, resulting in faster densification. This enhancement in sintering was explained by an increase in grain boundary mobility as caused by dissolution of CuO in 8YSZ matrix.
