A UNIFIED ONE-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE GAIN MECHANISM IN FREE-ELECTRON LASERS WITH HELICAL OR PLANAR MAGNET ARRAYS

A one-dimensional model of the free electron laser (FEL) in which the electron beam is treated as a relativistic fluid is used to determine in a uniform fashion the small-signal gain for all regimes of interest where thermal spread in the beam is negligible. The close relationship between FEL gain theory and that of the travelling-wave tube is discussed, and it is shown that in general the gain in a planar magnet array is significantly lower than that obtainable under equivalent conditions in a helical array of the same field strength and periodicity.
