摘要
A systematic error in direction measured by nickel-coated Aanderaa RCM5 current meters has been discovered. The error is pressure-dependent and results from the magnetization of the nickel coating by the compass magnets at high pressure, when the permeability of the nickel is increased by the stresses induced in the pressure case. At 1400 dbar no error is detectable, while at 2800 dbar tests showed errors of up to 10° and at pressures greater than 4200 dbar actual sticking of the compasses was observed. Under certain circumstances the direction errors could be corrected for in field data, but the problem should be avoided by replacing the nickel-coated cases with newer, uncoated models. Investigators who use Aanderaa current meters at high pressures should be aware of these effects. © 1979.
