STUDY OF SOLVENT DEPENDENCE AND KINETICS OF PROTON-TRANSFER REACTIONS OF 3-HYDROXYBIPHENYL IN THE EXCITED SINGLET-STATE

摘要
A comparison of the absorption and fluorescence maxima of 3-hydroxybiphenyl in various solvents reveals that the hydroxyl group in the meta position interacts with biphenyl in the excited state only. Fluorimetric titration gives stretched sigmoidal curves with two inflection points. These curves are analysed and the rate constants for the excited state proton transfer reactions are determined using the lifetimes of the species.
