High Tcsuperconductors of the nominal composition of Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3Oywere successfully prepared by the conventional ceramic technique. The high Tcphase was predominant in all the samples giving zero resistance at 104 K. Drastic changes in density, as well as other material properties were obtained through a slight modification in the powder preparation process. Single-phase high Tcsamples with a critical current density of 1000-1200 A/cm2(at 77 K) were prepared by sintering in air for 250 h at 845°C. Most of the grains were aligned with their c-axis normal to the pellet surface. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.
