摘要
We have investigated the electronic structure of KMnO4 by means of photoemission (PES) and electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). While a pure ionic picture gives the formal charge states Mn7+ and O2-, respectively, the following picture is deduced: the strong covalent bonding between the manganese and oxygen ions leads to a substantial occupation of the Mn-3d shell, i.e. around 3d(5) instead of 3d(0) for the Mn7+ ion.
