摘要
This article examines the controversy surrounding the development of marginal oilfields in Nigeria. Marginal oilfields are non-producing fields that are held by the multinational oil companies. There are estimated to be about 183 such fields in Nigeria, with an estimated reserve of BOO million barrels of oil. Such oilfields are regarded as uneconomical because of the high overhead costs required to make them productive. However, they are attractive to small, indigenous oil companies because of their low overhead cost. This article also examines the effect of the Petroleum Amendment Act 1996 on the development of marginal oilfields in Nigeria.
