CIRCULATION AND MIXING IN STRATIFIED ESTUARIES

The physical processes active in highly stratified estuaries are briefly reviewed to provide a context for studies of biology and chemistry. It is concluded that the two most important factors are likely to be the residence time of the saline bottom waters and the exchange rates across the halocline. Quantification of the processes requires direct measurements to be completed at the same time as the other studies.
